The letter should attempt to give insight into the student’s personal qualities and his/her interactions with others. How many courses has the student had from you? Did you have contact with the applicant outside of class? Letters should make clear how well you know the applicant. Explain Your Contact with the Applicant. The following outline may provide helpful information in determining what to include in a letter of recommendation: If you do write anything that is negative in a letter, you should provide evidence for your statements. If you do not feel you could provide a thorough enough or positive enough letter on the student, let them know. Tell the student how you feel about writing a letter for them. You may find that the qualities and skills that might predict potential success in graduate school would be different than those for a job, so letters of recommendations for jobs may differ from those for graduate school. Some faculty develop a form they give to students that requests this information. A deadline for when the letter is needed.A phone number and address of where the student can be reached.Any ideas the student has on what they would like you to address in the letter.(This could be requested in writing or in an individual meeting with you) An explanation of the student’s career goals or type of job or graduate school they hope to enter. Some academic information such as copies of transcripts or list of courses completed. Some of the things you could ask for are: You may want to request specific information from the student in order to write the letter. Please use departmental letterhead for either of these. Students may request a letter written to a specific school or job, OR, they may request a general “To Whom It May Concern” letter. I hope you will give this young man the opportunity to continue to excel both at the United States Air Force Academy and as a future Air Force Officer.Writing letters of recommendation for students applying to graduate schools and to jobs can be a difficult and time-consuming task for professors or other university personnel. His fellow Airmen are drawn to him by his personality and sincere concern for others. His cheerfulness and consideration for others have made him an indispensable part of our unit. He is a team player and gets along well with his team mates. Sergeant Sims is not only a disciplined professional. His personnel record confirms what I have observed and you will see that this young man has continuously demonstrated that he has what it takes to be a sterling addition to the United States Air Force Officer Corps. He maintains a rigorous physical training program that keeps him in top condition.

He is the epitome of the Air Force NCO and possesses enormous potential to be a great leader as an Air Force Officer. Sergeant Sims is the type of Airman that needs little or no supervision to get the job done. He continuously seeks self improvement and accepts greater responsibility with humility. Not satisfied with merely doing his job, on his own initiative, he has continued to advance his education. He is an upright Non-commissioned Officer of high character, as evidenced by his total devotion to duty and his efforts to further his education.
